Out-n-About in Blowing Rock

Hard to believe Summer 2012 is almost behind us. The temps here in the NC mountains are already dropping into the low-50s at night, and the trees are sprinkled with color. One of our last hurrahs of the season is hosting my good friend and editor, Katherine Forrest, and her partner Jo, for a week of relaxation & adventure. Jenny & I have had great fun introducing them to NC barbecue, the Linville Gorge (surely the inspiration for the word “gorgeous”), and lesbian life in the High Country.

We have a vibrant lesbian family spread throughout the area, which is hometo Appalachian State University, the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway, and a creative community of bluegrass musicians, artists, craftspeople and writers. Idyllic … until it starts to snow. More than half of us are gone by then, back to the warm climes of South Florida or the California desert.
Each month, we gather for what we call an Out-n-About dinner at a local restaurant, usually 10-15 women meeting for fine food & family. I sent a note to Carol, the organizer, to say I’d be bringing Katherine along in August, and asked her to get the word out for anyone who wanted to meet one of the true pioneers of our movement, a woman who was brave enough to write lesbian love stories when most of us were hiding in the closet out of fear of losing our jobs, our friends and the love of our families. RSVPs poured in and last night, we had a grand banquet of 50 women in Blowing Rock, many of them carrying some of the dog-eared books that got them through the 80s & 90s. It was remarkable & moving to see how delighted so many of these women were at the chance to meet someone who had touched them at a critical time in their lives. If ever I needed a reminder of the power of our books, I heard it in their sharing of what life was like for them Before.

Thanks to all for *coming out* and for making the evening special for Katherine & me.

In case you missed it, I was featured in an interview at Lambda Literary Review a couple of weeks ago.

  1. KG, couple things come to mind, what a thrill that someone so legendary was in NC (our state), that’s pretty cool! Also, what did she think of REAL nc BBQ?? I always say to me TX friends, “if you come to NC, I’ll take you to have some Real BBQ!”
